CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The two newest K-9s on the job in Cranston now have their own protective gear.

The police department announced earlier this year that K-9s Ryken and Czar were going to get bullet and stab protective vests from Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc.

The nonprofit organization sponsored Ryken's vest and Charlestown resident Nancy Scime sponsored Czar's.

Ryken's vest is embroidered with the message "In memory of K-9 Lex" in honor of a fellow K-9 officer who passed away in September.

Czar's says "Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always."

"These K-9's are thrust into critical situations, including the apprehension of non-compliant suspects, narcotics, high risk searches and other dangerous situations," said Col. Michael Winquist.

"We remain confident when sending these highly trained canines into these situations, that they have maximum protection," he continued.

Vested Interest charitably creates protective gear and other assistance to dogs in law enforcement. The mission is made possible through donations.

The organization was founded in 2009. It has since made over 5,000 vests for K-9s across the country.
